Jonas Gerigk

DOUBLE BASS - COMPOSER / PERFORMER

ABOUT

Jonas Gerigk is a double bass player and works mainly in the fields of improvised music. For many years he has been developing his own vocabulary using techniques, objects and preparations that he is constantly refining and adapting in different improvising ensembles and his solo project.

Beside touring with his solo project (Germany 2021, France 2022, Scandinavia 2023), he is working with friends on long-term band projects in which the improvising ensemble develops a common identity.

In addition, he collaborates in projects of contemporary composers and is involved in the realization of their works. When the occasion arises, he also enjoys working with dancers and visual artists in interdisciplinary projects.

His academic education was accompanied by many mentors at Academies of Music such as HfM Dresden, NMH Oslo (Bachelor’s studies) and HfMT Köln (Master’s studies).

From September 2024 he will be working on his PhD in Artistic Research at HSLU Luzern – Musik.

Between 2017 – 2024 he released 12 albums as leader or co-leader and was involved in 5 album releases as a sideman. Of particular note is his solo album Sound Plantings (2021) on which he incorporated certain playing techniques that he cultivated on long term processes during his Master’s studies in Cologne.

During his musical journey, he has worked with various established musicians on concerts and recordings, including artists such as Axel Dörner, Tony Buck, Frank Gratkowski, Magda Mayas, Mazen Kerbaj, Etienne Nillesen, Jonas Engel, Carl Ludwig Hübsch, Elisabeth Coudoux, Nicola L. Hein, Matthias Muche, Florian Walter, Marlies Debacker, Ferdinand Schwarz, Johannes Schleiermacher and many more.

His close collaborators are Olaf Rupp, Ulrike Brand, Steffen Roth, Burkhard Beins, Anaïs Tuerlinckx, Emily Wittbrodt, Darius Heid, Rieko Okuda, Georg Wissel, Simon Rose, Michal Wróblewski, Marco Fiorini, among others.
Concert tours took him to France, Switzerland, Great Britain, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Vietnam, Australia…

His projects were supported by Musikfonds e.V., Kulturamt Stadt Köln, Initiative Freie Musik Köln, Ministry of Culture and Science NRW, Deutscher Musikrat, Goethe Institute, saxstall – Musik im ländlichen Raum e.V. and a recording scholarships from Loft Köln – 2ndFLOOR e.V.

From time to time he also felt a need to organize concerts series. So he was part of the team hosting the radio shows HEIMklang (Dresden) and SnapShot (Cologne), in which free improvisations of changing groups were broadcasted live in the studio.

Between October 2020 and February 2021 he organized the concert series RAUMKLANG – Explorative Music at the Atelier KunstRaum Dorissa Lem in Cologne. And in 2023 he organized 6 residences plus concerts at the venue saxstall in Pohrsdorf. This project was called FREIER FREITAG.

Jonas Gerigk is a member of the musicians’ collective IMPAKT – Improvisation und aktuelle Musik Köln.
